Bunk Bed Playhouse with Climbing Wall

We wanted to make a playhouse for the kids, but their two cribs were taking up too much room in their bedroom. So we made a bunk bed playhouse using the crib mattresses.

Here is a tour:

Instead of a ladder, we put a climbing wall in the middle. We found these awesome climbing wall grips/handholds on amazon:

They are super strong, high quality, and were really easy to attach. I had found some plywood on a side street anyways and needed to use it for something, so now it is a climbing wall.

We have not done much in the interior yet, but we moved the kids play kitchen inside and a table a chairs. Christmas lights are on clearance right now so we used a couple strings to light the interior.

Cayman's Raccoon Video

Raccoons have been visiting us the last several nights so Cayman and I went out and filmed them and Cayman did the voice over for our nature film:

If you have not yet seen my frog documentary, might I suggest the following:

Halloween

During the month of October we went to the Los Angeles Zoo at least 10 times. The Rhino has recovered and is back on display (horn cancer). For Halloween we enjoyed several friends company and costume wise went with a finding Nemo theme of clownfish and seagulls.

Hawaii Part 2 - Diving Videos

I was able to get about 60 dives in during our trip and had many first including: being surrounded by a pod of dolphins, seeing a new born baby dolphin, finding my first Tinker's Butterflyfish, finding my first psychedelic wrasse, as well as a finding a reliable spot to find Masked Angelfish. Here are a some videos I made:

Hawaii 2016 Part 1

Getting two toddlers, carseats, a stroller, camera gear, and scuba gear to the Big Island of Hawaii is not worth it for a short trip. So we are taking a long trip.

First up was celebrating Cayman's 3rd Birthday.

The kids adjusted to the island life style quickly. I made a glass bottom boat and was able to show them many neat fish.

Cayman and I found a tiny frog on the front yard and Cayman carefully held it then released it to be free and wild.

One of my favorite spots on the island is the Big Island Brewhaus restaurant. Here is Hazel and I posing for a quick photo out front. Below is Cayman and I doing the same thing back in 2014

Aloha and Mahalo for reading.

Hooray for Sleep!

Shelley and I got a great Valentine's Day present as Hazel began sleeping through the night. Just as with Cayman we carefully tracked her sleeping patterns since birth and slowly worked her towards our goals. So far it seems to have worked, as the last several days she has slept through the night. Here is her sleeping behavior since birth.

Cayman Learns New Skills

Cayman is growing up and learning new skills. He loves talking on the phone to Mimi:

Here he is practicing basketball:

He also likes to push his bike around and hold his dust pan.

Mommy Shelley stays very busy with the babies and lap space is a valuable commodity.

We had a great time at our friend's Super Bowl party and got to take some family photos at Mel and Blake's house:

We then attempted to get a photo of Cayman and Hazel. Here is what happened:

Hazel's First Bath and More Baby Photos

Hazel had her first bath and loved it. She loves kicking and moving her arms in the water. She did get a little sad after getting some water in her mouth.

Cayman is now a pro in the bath and has recently started blowing bubbles.

Here are a few more photos of Hazel:

B2 Bomber Flyby Over Our House

Cayman and I got up early and braved the cold to see the Rose Bowl flyby. This video was taken from the hill behind our house. Next year, I know the perfect spot to see it.

Baby Hazel Comes Home & We Celebrate Christmas

On Christmas Eve, we were able to bring our little Hazel home. Shelley is already walking around and put Hazel into the carseat (thanks Krystina) for the ride home.

Sleeping at home for the first time.

Shelley eats Christmas morning breakfast with Hazel while Cayman licks the baby gate.

As soon as news arrived, Grandpa Carl updated his Christmas sign on the outside of their house.

Baby is coming

Shelley is now in labor and we are expecting the baby today. We'll announce the name when the baby is born, but here are some hints.
  • it's a girl
  • the name is both that of an island and plant
  • the following is the distribution for the name's popularity in the US (the higher the shape, the more popular the name was that year)
Email Kendall your guesses (if you want) or reply to this blog post.

Update:
Thanks for all the name guesses.

The name Hazel peaked in popularity in the 1890's (an 1890's typical Hazel shown below)

Mom is Ready for New Baby & Cayman Makes a Friend

Shelley is now past her due date and very ready for the baby to come out and enjoy an external Christmas. Shelley has been awesome. She has been walking, cleaning the house, and even doing Pilates, via Jessie her sister/instructor.

We also got a zoo membership and Cayman and I went today and checked out the petting zoo. Cayman first made sure he pet each animal exactly once in frantic around the stable frenzy. He then found a beautiful white goat sitting on a box and quietly climbed up and sat next to it. He sat there with the goat for almost 10 minutes. He occasionally pet it and even kissed the goat a couple times. The goat gave gentle goat noises of approval.

At the zoo, Cayman also got to go on his first Marry-Go-Round. He choose a fiberglass panda, but that turned out to be a slightly scary experience. Cayman was brave, however, and made through all six revolutions.
